Good idea! Tech used to be my passion, but regretfully, i haven't got a firm spirit like yours to chase, then direct to another way. But still volunteerism and community service are a part of my life. Hope to join hands with u in community program someday. Vote 4 u ! |

Small things add up
In the following talk I will present to you some very practical and achievable actions that I can take as a contribution to the economy in this tough time.
To begin with, I'm writing my university thesis on how Vietnamese travel companies can apply social technologies (blogs, forums, social networks, community tools) to attract international visitors. These technologies, while very cost-effective, allow companies to present their expertise and talk to customers directly online, where most of them are spending time and doing travel research. That being said, I really hope this thesis can be of use to the local tourism industry, especially in the face of the current economic situation.
For every student who's about to graduate, having a firm career start is important. For me, I've chosen to work with a software engineering company. It's a great opportunity to work on something I'm passionate about, have hands-on experience, and develop myself. My goal is to succeed with the company, and in turn contribute to the overall well-being of the economy.
On the other hand, as a blogger who covers technology in English, I've set out to bring in insiders' perspectives about what's going on in the tech sector in Vietnam, especially the recent developments in online businesses. Through my blog, many people outside of Vietnam, including foreigners and overseas Vietnamese, are able to learn more about this young IT industry and the interesting things happening everyday. Many come to Vietnam to look for business opportunities, either company establishment or partnership. Blogs, together with mainstream media, play a vital role in information provision. The more informed people are, the better the chance of success.
Still, communities are what I champion. I'm going to help organize Barcamp Saigon 2, a "user-generated" technology conference for local IT enthusiasts. The first one brought nearly 300 people from all corner of the technology sector together and marked a milestone in the development of the local IT community. Follow-up events that I've helped organize become a central point for them to meet, exchange ideas, and share knowledge. But there are more I believe I can do to further that community. In future, our organizing team will have participants take turn to give talk on particular topics so that knowledge can be shared in a more thematic manner. Moreover, there will be things that can be done to bring that knowledge, which has exclusively been shared among the IT community, to the business one, who is looking to improve their business through technology.
Finally, volunteerism and community service are a part of my life. I'm working on a personal project to bring Web and Open Source technologies to disadvantaged children. They really love technology and can quickly learn innovative applications, which are beneficial to their future. Of course, this is a long-term project which requires a lot of commitments and assistance from the community. I hope to have at least one pilot project running by this year end. This is the translation of my passion about technology into something that can make a change in the life of the kids.
Thank you for listening. |
